Finding the right landscape contractor for your project is no simple task. There are numerous professionals competing for your business and it’s hard to know who you can trust. What should you be looking for? Where do you begin?

To start, you should have an idea of what it is you want to achieve. We recommend our clients start by obtaining a landscape plan done by either a certified landscape designer (CLD) or a landscape architect (LA). It's also a good idea to check that you're hiring a company that is a member of Landscape Ontario The landscape plan is crucial if you want to see your vision come to fruition. And even at these early stages, it’s important to have a budget in mind.

There are several questions you should ask your landscape designer or architect. We recommend asking the following:

  • How long have you been in the landscaping business?
  • Do you have liability insurance? Are you covered by Workers’ Compensation?
  • What warranties do you offer?
  • Are any permits required for this job? Whose responsibility is it to get these permits?
  • What is your timeline for this project?
  • What is your clean-up routine?
  • Do you provide a written contract?
  • Can you provide referrals?
  • Do you have a website?

Finding someone you trust and can have a good working relationship with will make this process much more enjoyable and exciting. Don’t settle until you’ve found a professional you truly feel comfortable with and then jump happily into the project with both feet.
